Stress-Free Travel Planning for Families with Children with Hidden Disabilities

At World of Possibilities Travel, we understand the unique challenges that families with children who have hidden disabilities face when planning a vacation. Whether your child has Autism, Down Syndrome, Anxiety, or other hidden disabilities, our goal is to create a stress-free and enjoyable experience for your entire family.

As a Certified Autism Travel Professional through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and Autism Double Checked Certified, I am dedicated to helping families navigate these challenges. I’ve made it my mission to ensure that travel is accessible and enjoyable for all, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

But my expertise goes beyond certifications—it’s personal. As a mother of a child with a hidden disability, I understand firsthand how overwhelming planning a trip can be. My son has been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an Anxiety Disorder, and our vacations are often filled with the unknown: Will the room setup trigger his anxiety? Will the kids club staff know how to handle a meltdown? Will other parents judge me if he has a meltdown in public? These are questions I ask myself every time we travel.

I know how important it is to create a safe, welcoming environment for him, and I take the same care in planning vacations for other families. From ensuring plenty of time at the airport to booking connecting hotel rooms or cruise cabins to give him space, we’ve learned that with the right planning, travel can be an incredible opportunity for him to grow and learn to manage his anxiety in new environments.

We Are Here For You

How We Support Families with Hidden Disabilities:

1. Personalized Travel Planning

We work with you to understand your family’s specific needs. Whether you need sensory-friendly environments, specialized accommodations, or assistance navigating airport security, we customize every aspect of your trip to ensure it’s as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

2. Preparation for a Smooth Travel Experience

  • Before the Flight: We assist in finding social stories to help prepare your child for travel. We guide you through packing sensory and comfort items and provide advice on airport procedures that will help reduce anxiety.
  • Airport Assistance: We will coordinate with TSA Cares to help ensure your child’s airport experience is calm and manageable.
  • On the Airplane: We’ll help you secure seats that work best for your family and provide recommendations for sensory-friendly activities to keep your child entertained during the flight.

3. On-the-Ground Support

Whether traveling by car, train, or cruise, we ensure that you have the right accommodations for a peaceful journey. From booking quieter hotel rooms to arranging for early boarding on cruises or planes, we handle the details so you can focus on enjoying your time together.

About Me

My Personal Story:

As a parent of a child with OCD, I know how much anxiety travel can create—not just for my son but for me as well. I’ve spent countless vacations wondering whether he’ll be able to manage a new environment, whether we’ll have enough time to calm him if he has a meltdown, or if the room configuration will trigger his anxiety.

We’ve learned through experience that getting to the airport early gives us time to de-escalate any potential issues. Booking connecting hotel rooms or cruise cabins gives him the space he needs to manage his anxiety. And ensuring kids clubs have a way to contact us in case of a meltdown provides reassurance. These are just some of the strategies I’ve implemented to make travel possible for our family.

I believe that travel opens up a world of possibilities for all children, even those with hidden disabilities. It’s not only a chance for them to see new places but also an opportunity to learn how to manage their disabilities in unfamiliar situations. I also understand how exhausting it can be as a parent, constantly managing meltdowns, appointments, and stress. That’s why I’m passionate about making travel as easy and enjoyable as possible for families like ours.
